FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What weight is the Heavy cap backing — and is that right for me?
This product is 3.0 oz, classified as Heavy-weight tear-away stabilizer. The 3.0 oz weight is the industry standard for most cap embroidery — structured baseball caps, snapbacks, trucker caps, and standard logo/lettering designs. If your designs are heavily dense, include 3D puff, or have more than ~8,000 stitches, consider stepping up to our 3.5 oz Extra Heavy.
Why pre-cut 4″ × 8″ sheets instead of a roll?
The pre-cut sheet format gives you a few real production advantages: no cutting prep time, no waste from miscuts, consistent sheet size every time, and easier training for new operators (they just grab a sheet and hoop). The downside is a slightly higher per-square-inch cost vs the roll format. Most production shops doing under 5,000 caps/month find the time savings outweigh the cost. Our 250 sheets per box gives you enough inventory for hundreds of caps per box.
What size are the sheets, and will they fit my cap hoop?
Sheets are 4″ × 8″ (102mm × 203mm) — the standard size for cap embroidery on multi-needle commercial machines. This fits every major cap hoop system: Tajima, Brother, Baby Lock, Melco, Toyota, Ricoma, SWF, Happy, Barudan, and Janome MB. The 8″ length gives you margin to position the design and tear cleanly afterwards.
How is this different from regular tear-away stabilizer?
Cap backing differs from regular flat-garment tear-away in three important ways: (1) Width — cut to 4″ specifically to fit cap hoops without trimming; (2) Weight — cap-specific weights (3.0 and 3.5 oz) are heavier than typical flat-garment tear-away (1.8 oz) because the curved cap surface and center seam create more strain; (3) Tear characteristics — cap backing is engineered to tear cleanly along the embroidered edge without distorting the design, which matters more on the small confined cap embroidery area.
What machines is this compatible with?
All major multi-needle commercial embroidery machines with cap-driver attachments: Tajima, Brother, Baby Lock, Melco, Toyota, Ricoma, SWF, Happy, Barudan, Janome MB Series, and most other commercial brands. If your machine has a cap hoop system, this backing works with it. Single-needle home/hobby machines generally don’t support cap embroidery and won’t benefit from this product.
Do I need to use cap backing at all? My caps are structured.
Yes — always use cap backing, even on heavily-structured caps. Without backing, three things go wrong: (1) the center seam of the cap catches on the needle plate, causing thread breaks and stitching issues; (2) the bobbin thread tension drifts because the bobbin needs the backing surface to track against; (3) the back of your embroidery looks rough because there’s no stable substrate to anchor the stitches. The buckram inside the cap is NOT a substitute for proper tear-away cap backing.
How does the tear-away work — won’t it pull the embroidery?
Tear-away cap backing is engineered with a controlled tear strength: strong enough to support the stitching during the run, but weak enough to release cleanly along the edge of the embroidery without pulling stitches or distorting the design. After embroidery is complete, you just tear the excess backing along the edge of the design — it comes off cleanly. The non-woven fiber structure tears in either direction without leaving fuzzy residue inside the embroidery.
What needle should I use with cap backing?
For finished caps, we recommend 75/11 or 80/12 sharp-point needles. For high-volume production or high stitch count designs, switch to titanium needles — they last 5× longer, resist glue and adhesive buildup, and produce fewer needle breaks on dense fills. Ballpoint needles will skip stitches on woven cap fabric and should not be used for cap embroidery.
Can I use this backing for 3D puff embroidery?
The 3.0 oz weight works for light 3D puff designs, but if you do regular 3D puff work, our 3.5 oz Extra Heavy is the better choice — it provides the extra body and support that dense puff stitching requires. For occasional puff work on otherwise-light designs, the 3.0 oz is fine.
Why is my embroidery flagging on the cap front?
“Flagging” (where the cap fabric folds or shifts as the hoop moves) usually means one of three things: (1) the cap isn’t hooped tightly enough — reset the cap on the frame and re-snap the hoop; (2) the design isn’t digitized center-out, bottom-up — check the stitch order in your digitizing software; (3) the design exceeds the cap’s usable sewing area — most cap systems max out around 2″ tall by 4-5″ wide. Proper cap backing reduces flagging but doesn’t eliminate it — the hooping and digitizing matter as much.
My caps are coming out with thread breaks on dense designs. What’s wrong?
Thread breaks on dense cap designs are almost always one of these: (1) needle is too small or wrong type — switch to a titanium 80/12; (2) tension is too tight on top — loosen the top tension half a turn; (3) the cap front (or backing) needs lubrication for dense areas — a light spray of dry silicone (Sprayway) on the backing before the run reduces thread breaks dramatically; (4) the design has too many stitches packed into too small an area — consider opening up the stitch density in your digitizing software.
How many caps will one box/roll do?
Roughly: 250 sheets per box = 250 caps (one sheet per cap) for standard designs, or about 200-225 caps if you use larger 6-8″ tall sheets for jacket-back style designs. Actual mileage depends on your design size and how generously you cut. Most shops find one box/roll lasts several months in a typical embroidery operation.
When this is out of stock, when will it ship?
When we’re temporarily out of stock at the RCS San Antonio warehouse, your order automatically drop-ships directly from our manufacturer’s warehouse in Oklahoma. There’s a 1-2 business day processing window at the manufacturer, then standard ground shipping (1-3 business days to most US destinations). Most customers receive drop-shipped orders within 3-5 business days total. You’ll see tracking info in your account either way.
Is the price the same whether it ships from RCS or drop-ships from the OK warehouse?
Yes — the product price, shipping cost, and FREE shipping threshold ($200+) are the same whether the order ships from our San Antonio warehouse or drop-ships from our manufacturer’s warehouse in Oklahoma. You’re not paying anything extra for drop-shipped orders.
Can I get a sample to test before ordering a full box?
Cap backing isn’t something we typically send samples of — the per-unit cost is low and the testing process needs enough sheets to run a real embroidery test (you can’t really evaluate cap backing from a single piece). However, if you’re a new commercial embroidery shop evaluating us as a supplier and want to discuss your specific needs before ordering, reach out via Tidio chat or email and we’ll help you figure out what’s right for your operation.
Is this shipping really same-day?
Yes — when this product is in stock at our San Antonio, TX warehouse, orders placed before 3:30 PM Central Time on a business day ship the same day. FREE shipping on orders over $200. When we’re out of stock, the order drop-ships from our manufacturer’s OK warehouse with a 1-2 day processing window. Either way, you’re getting the same product, same price, and the same River City Supply customer service.
