How to use it

1Cut a length from the roll. A longer piece that covers about two-thirds of the cap can make hooping easier.
2Steam the cap front before hooping to soften the center seam so it sits flat in the frame.
3Place the backing in the cap frame behind the front panels, then hoop the cap with the clips. Unstructured caps shift during sewing, so use backing and clips on them.
4For hard-to-hoop caps, use two pieces of cap backing for extra stability.
5Use a cap-digitized design that sews from the center out and from the bottom up to prevent flagging.
6Use a sharp-point needle for woven caps. If needles or thread break, try a #80/12 standard-eye or titanium needle.
7After sewing, tear the backing away from the stitches. It tears cleanly right up to the stitch line.

Keep both cutaway and tearaway on hand. Tearaway is often combined with cutaway for extra support, and woven fabrics are usually sturdy enough for tearaway alone.

Choose stabilizer weight by both the fabric type and the size of the design.

Washaway backing dissolves in warm water with light agitation and is used where the back of the embroidery is visible, such as freestanding lace, cutwork, napkins and delicate fabrics.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need backing on a structured cap?

Most shops back every cap. Some skip it on front placements of structured caps, but backing also keeps the center seam from dragging on the needle plate. Unstructured caps and side placements need it.

What’s the difference between structured and unstructured caps?

A structured cap has a stiff fabric called buckram inside the two front panels. An unstructured cap does not.

Can I use lightweight tearaway on caps?

It’s not recommended. Lightweight tearaway is too weak for caps. Cap backing is typically a 3.0 oz tearaway.

What backing goes on the side or back of a cap?

Sides have no buckram, so use one piece of cap backing on twill and mesh caps and at least two pieces (or a cutaway) on Flexfit and stretch caps. Use cutaway for back placements.

Why do my cap designs flag or shift?

Flagging happens when the fabric bounces off the needle plate. Sewing from the center out and bottom up, with underlay, helps prevent it.
