What Is Cutaway Backing — And Why Does It Matter?
Cutaway backing is a permanent embroidery stabilizer that stays in the garment after stitching is complete. Unlike tear-away backing (which is removed entirely after embroidery), cutaway is cut close to the design with scissors or a backing trimmer, leaving a small border behind the stitches to provide ongoing support for the life of the garment.
You need cutaway (not tear-away) when:

How to Use Cutaway Backing
1️⃣ Hoop the Backing
Place the cutaway backing under your fabric in the hoop. The backing should fully cover the embroidery area plus extend at least 1 inch past the design on all sides.
2️⃣ Stabilize With Spray (Optional)
For stretchy or slippery fabrics, use a light coat of temporary spray adhesive between fabric and backing to prevent shifting during stitching.
3️⃣ Embroider Your Design
Run your embroidery. The cutaway holds the fabric perfectly still and prevents the puckering, shifting, and distortion that would ruin the design.
4️⃣ Cut Away the Excess
Use embroidery scissors to trim the backing close to the design, leaving a small (1/8″ to 1/4″) border. The trimmed border stays in the garment permanently to support the stitches.

What’s the difference between cutaway and tear-away backing?
Cutaway is permanent — it stays in the garment after stitching to provide ongoing reinforcement for the life of the garment. You cut it close to the design with scissors. Best for stretch fabrics, knits, high stitch counts, and premium garments meant to last. Tear-away is removed entirely after stitching by tearing it away from the design. It’s faster and cleaner-looking, but provides no permanent support — best for stable woven fabrics with low-to-medium stitch counts like cap embroidery and twill goods. If your fabric stretches or your design is dense, choose cutaway. If your fabric is stable and your design is simple, tear-away may be sufficient.
Why use black cutaway instead of white?
On dark or black garments, white cutaway backing can show through as a visible halo behind the design — especially after the garment has been washed many times and the fabric has worn slightly. Black cutaway is the same material and weight as white, just dyed black so it stays invisible behind dark fabrics. Use black on dark polos, black t-shirts, black uniforms, and any dark apparel where the finished look has to be flawless. For light or medium colored garments, use the white version of the same weight (this product also comes in white).
What size sheet (or length roll) should I buy?
For sheets: match the size to your hoop and design area. The backing should fully cover the embroidery zone plus extend at least 1 inch past the design on all sides. Common sizes: 7″×7″ or 8″×8″ for left-chest logos, 9″×9″ or 10″×10″ for larger designs, 15″×20″ for jacket backs. For rolls: longer rolls give the best per-yard cost — buy a 100yd or 200yd roll if you do volume work; smaller rolls are fine for low-volume shops.
Will it really stay in the garment after washing?
Yes. Cutaway backing is designed to be permanent — it washes through the entire life of the garment without breaking down, shrinking significantly, or compromising the embroidery. The small border you leave around the design after cutting stays invisible behind the stitches and continues to provide support through hundreds of wash cycles. This permanence is exactly what makes cutaway the right choice for premium, long-lasting embroidery.
How do I cut it cleanly without damaging the design?
Use sharp embroidery scissors with a curved or duckbill blade, or a dedicated backing trimmer. Cut on the back side of the garment, leaving a 1/8″ to 1/4″ border around the design. Don’t cut too close — you need the border to support the stitches — and don’t cut into the fabric itself. Take your time on detailed or curved designs. A pair of dedicated embroidery scissors is a worthwhile investment if you do volume cutaway work.
Can I use this with spray adhesive?
Yes — and for stretch or slippery fabrics, you should. A light coat of temporary spray adhesive between the fabric and backing prevents shifting during hooping and stitching. Use sparingly — a heavy coat can gum up the needle and cause thread breaks. Best practice: hold the can 8-10 inches from the backing and apply a brief, light mist.
Will this work on my embroidery machine?

A 50-yard roll handles roughly 250-400 garments depending on hoop size. A 200-yard roll handles 1,000-1,600 garments. Plan for some waste — cutting errors, hoop misalignment, and irregular shapes.
What needle and thread should I use with cutaway?
For most cutaway work on knits and stretch fabrics, use a 75/11 or 80/12 SES ball point needle (the rounded tip pushes between knit fibers without cutting them). For woven fabrics, use a sharp point.
