What it is for
Key facts
The 2.5 oz cutaway is made for medium-weight stretchy fabrics with medium stitch counts.
It works well on fleece, pique knits and other stretchy fabrics, preventing distortion and giving a clean finish.
The fabric type plus the design’s size and density decide which cutaway weight you need.
How to use it
- 1Cut the backing at least one inch larger than the hoop on all sides so the hoop grips it fully.
- 2Hoop the backing and garment together, keeping the garment taut but not stretched. Compression fabrics are the exception.
- 3For most jobs one layer of the right weight is enough. Extra layers can over-stabilize and stiffen the garment.
- 4After stitching, remove the hoop and trim the excess backing from around the design. Leave the backing under the stitches in place.
- 5Leave about 1/4 inch of backing around the design. Cutting right up to the stitches can weaken the support.
- 6Use sharp, curved-tip embroidery scissors for a clean cut without nicking the garment.

Good to know
Cutaway backing gives permanent support to unstable fabrics. It stays in the garment after embroidery instead of being removed.
Basic cutaways come in white or black and run roughly 2.0 oz to 3.1 oz. Performance versions run about 1.5 oz to 2.7 oz.
Cutaway is the right choice for knits, sweaters, fleece and lightweight or stretchy wovens.
Cutaway stays with the design for the life of the garment and won’t wash out or break down.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Frequently asked questions
What is 2.5 oz cutaway best for?
Medium-weight stretchy fabrics with medium stitch counts, such as fleece and pique knit polos.
Do I tear or cut cutaway backing?
Cut it. After stitching, trim it from around the back of the design with scissors. The part under the stitches stays in the garment.
How close should I trim?
Leave about 1/4 inch of backing around the design. Trimming right against the stitches is a common mistake.
Should I use two layers?
Usually not. A single layer of the correct weight is enough for most jobs; too much backing can be as harmful as too little.
