About TW 5500 single-pigment mixing colors

The TW 5500 mixing colors (codes 01 to 11) each contain one pigment, so you can build custom and matched colors by weight with predictable results. They dry to the same flat finish as the rest of the 5500 line and share its mesh, drying and clean-up guidelines.

✓Weigh every component on a gram scale and record the formula so you can repeat the color on the next order.
✓Start your mix from the closest mixing colors; Fire Red (5514) is also a single-pigment color and can be used in formulas.
✓Lighten with 5521 Hi-Hide White for opaque tints, or extend with 5530 Flat Base for transparent tints.
✓For stronger color, WB-01 to WB-11 concentrates match these pigment names; add no more than 30% concentrate by weight to 5530 Flat Base or white.
✓Draw down or print a test swatch and let it dry fully before judging the match, since wet water-based ink looks different than dry ink.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What is TW 5505 Magenta?

TW 5505 Magenta is a strong pink-red that leans toward blue. It is the key ingredient for pinks, berries, purples and fuchsia. It is part of the TW 5500 Series Flat Water-Based Poster Ink. Its closest PANTONE equivalent is PANTONE 864 C. TW Graphics 5500 Series is a one-component, flat-finish water-based screen printing ink for posters, card stock, Tyvek and plastics such as Coroplast, styrene, PVC and polycarbonate. It air dries in 20 to 30 minutes or force dries in seconds, cleans up with water-based press wash, and gives rich, non-glare color.

What PANTONE color is TW 5505 Magenta?

TW 5505 Magenta is the closest TW standard match to PANTONE 864 C. PANTONE equivalents are close visual matches, not exact formulations, so print a test on your stock and compare it to a current PANTONE guide. Download the TW 5000 and 5500 PANTONE equivalent guide from the Documents tab.

Why use single-pigment colors instead of standard colors for matching?

Each mixing color has only one pigment, so formulas stay clean and repeatable. Mixing multi-pigment colors together tends to dull the result.

Can I print a mixing color straight from the can?

Yes. They are press-ready inks with the same drying and mesh guidelines as the rest of the line. Most shops use them as building blocks for custom colors.

Are there concentrates that match these colors?

Yes. WB-01 to WB-11 concentrates share these pigment names. Add up to 30% by weight to 5530 Flat Base or white.

What is the difference between the 5500 and 5000 Series?

The 5500 Series dries to a flat finish; the 5000 Series dries to a high gloss. Both share the same mesh, drying and clean-up guidelines.

How fast does it dry?

About 20 to 30 minutes in open air, or seconds in a dryer at 90 to 150°F (32 to 66°C).

Will it print on Coroplast?

Yes, on treated Coroplast and fluted polyolefin, with XPX1018 Activator added for chemical resistance.

What mesh count works best?

200 to 380 monofilament polyester mesh.

Can I thin it with water?

Yes. Use water or Z1820 thinner, up to 5 to 10% by weight. Too much slows drying and can cause blocking.

How long will it last outdoors?

Up to three years on most substrates. Reflex Blue and Ultra Blue are rated up to two years.

Can I make custom colors?

Yes. Mix from the single-pigment colors, or add WB color concentrates at up to 30% by weight to the clear base or white.
