Matsui Brite Discharge Base | Water-Based Discharge Mixing Base for Vivid Custom Colors on Dark Cotton — Mix with Neo Pigments for Pantone-Matched Discharge Prints
Matsui
Matsui Brite Discharge Base is a water-based discharge mixing base engineered for the most vivid, brightest custom-colored discharge prints on dark 100% cotton garments. Neutral/clear — contains no color or pigment. Add Matsui Neo Pigments (up to 15%) to create vibrant Pantone-matched discharge colors that chemically remove the garment dye and replace it with your custom color — embedding the pigment INTO the fabric for an ultra-soft, no-hand-feel print. Use alone (without pigment) as a clear discharge to strip the garment back to its natural base color, creating a blank canvas for overprinting. Or use as a soft-hand underbase for water-based or plastisol overprints on dischargeable fabrics. Requires discharge activator (3-8% Matsui or Printers Choice Discharge Activator). Prints through mesh up to 305/inch (120/cm) for fine detail spot color discharge. Blend 50/50 with HM Discharge Base for brighter prints through mesh up to 230/inch. Use Matsui additives to optimize production. Pair with Matsui CMS Color Matching Software for precise Pantone formulas. Cures at 320°F (160°C) for 2-3 minutes. PVC-free. ⚠️ Discharge only works on 100% cotton with reactive (dischargeable) dyes. Always test before production.
Price range: $24.99 through $219.99
Description
Matsui Brite Discharge Base — The Brightest Colors From the Darkest Shirts
The magic of discharge printing: you start with a black shirt. You print a color. You cure the garment. The garment dye under your print chemically disappears — and the color you printed takes its place. The print is not sitting ON the fabric. It is IN the fabric. The cotton fibers themselves are now the color you printed.
The result: the softest possible print. There is no ink layer to feel. No surface buildup. No rubbery film. The garment feels like it was dyed that color — because in a real sense, it was. The original dye was removed and your color was substituted.
Brite Discharge Base is where this process starts.
It is a neutral, clear discharge mixing base — no color, no pigment, no white. It contains the discharge-compatible binder and the chemistry that works with the discharge activator to strip the garment dye. YOU supply the color by adding Matsui Neo Pigments. The Brite Discharge system is specifically formulated for the brightest, most vivid color results in discharge printing — the colors that make clients say “how did you get that on a black shirt?”
How Discharge Printing Works
Step 1: Mix. Combine Brite Discharge Base + discharge activator (3-8% Matsui or Printers Choice Discharge Activator) + Neo Pigments (for color) in a clean vessel. Mix thoroughly.
Step 2: Print. Screen print the activated ink onto a dark 100% cotton garment with reactive (dischargeable) dyes.
Step 3: Cure. Run the garment through the dryer at 320°F (160°C) for 2-3 minutes. During curing, the discharge activator chemically breaks down the garment dye in the printed areas. The garment dye disappears. The Neo Pigment color replaces it — embedding directly into the cotton fibers.
Step 4: Result. The dark garment now has vivid color areas where the original dye has been removed and replaced with your custom color. The print has zero surface buildup. The hand feel is identical to the fabric itself.
Without Neo Pigments: If you print Brite Discharge Base + activator without adding Neo Pigments, the garment dye is removed but no replacement color is deposited. The printed area returns to the natural base color of the cotton (usually off-white or cream). This creates a “white” discharge effect — or more accurately, a “natural fiber” discharge. Use this technique as a soft-hand underbase for overprinting with water-based colors or plastisol.
Three Modes — Custom Color, Clear Discharge, Soft-Hand Underbase
Mode 1: Custom Color Discharge (Primary Use). Mix with Neo Pigments (up to 15%) + discharge activator (3-8%). The garment dye is removed and the Neo Pigment color replaces it. One step: strip + color in a single print. Use Matsui CMS Color Matching Software for precise Pantone formulas.
Mode 2: Clear Discharge (No Pigment). Mix with discharge activator only — no Neo Pigments. The garment dye is stripped, revealing the natural cotton base color (off-white/cream). Use as a standalone effect for tone-on-tone natural-on-dark designs.
Mode 3: Soft-Hand Underbase. Use as a discharged underbase for overprinting. Print Brite Discharge Base + activator on dark cotton → cure → the discharge removes the garment dye in the print area → overprint with water-based colors or plastisol on the now-lightened area. The discharge underbase provides a lighter surface for the overprint while maintaining an ultra-soft hand.
⚠️ The Discharge Rules — Read Before Printing
Discharge printing has specific requirements that standard water-based printing does not:
100% cotton with reactive dyes ONLY. Discharge chemistry removes reactive garment dyes. It does NOT remove pigment dyes, sulfur dyes, or non-reactive dyes. It does NOT discharge polyester, nylon, or synthetic fibers. On 50/50 cotton/poly blends, only the cotton threads discharge — the polyester threads retain their original color, creating a heathered/distressed look. Always test the specific garment brand and batch before production.
Discharge activator is REQUIRED. Brite Discharge Base does NOT discharge on its own. You MUST add discharge activator (3-8%) to enable the dye-removal chemistry. Without activator, the base functions as a standard water-based binder with no discharge effect.
12-hour pot life once activated. Once you add discharge activator to the base, the activated ink has a shelf life of approximately 12 hours. Mix only what you need for the day’s production. Do not store activated ink overnight.
Cure for 2-3 minutes at 320°F. Discharge printing requires longer cure times than standard water-based printing. The extended dwell time is needed for the discharge chemistry to fully break down the garment dye. If the print appears darker in some areas than others, the garment needs more cure time.
Ventilation required. Discharge ink emits strong fumes during curing (this is the garment dye being chemically broken down). Ensure proper dryer ventilation to dissipate the odor.
Re-dyed shirts may not discharge well. Garments that have been re-dyed (dyed a second time over the original color) may not discharge the first color layer. Check with your garment supplier for discharge-compatible brands and batches.
Test before production. Always. Discharge effectiveness varies by garment brand, dye lot, and cotton type.

Why Screen Printers Choose Brite Discharge Base
“I want the most vivid custom colors on dark cotton shirts.”
This is the core Brite Discharge Base use case. Mix with Neo Pigments + discharge activator. The Brite system delivers the brightest color results in the Matsui discharge lineup — vibrant reds, blues, greens, yellows, and full Pantone range on black, navy, and dark garments.
“I want zero hand feel — the print should feel like the fabric itself.”
Discharge printing embeds the color INTO the cotton fibers. There is no ink layer on the surface. The hand feel is identical to undyed fabric. This is the softest possible print in screen printing — softer than even the softest water-based ink, because there is literally no surface ink to feel.
“I want precise Pantone-matched discharge colors.”
Use Matsui CMS Color Matching Software with Neo Pigments to calculate exact discharge color formulas. Same Neo Pigment system, same Pantone formulas — just in a discharge base instead of a standard water-based base.
“I want to discharge to natural and overprint with color or plastisol.”
Print Brite Discharge Base + activator (no pigment) to strip the garment dye. The printed area returns to the natural cotton base color. Flash or cure. Then overprint with standard Matsui water-based colors, plastisol, or any compatible ink system on the lightened discharged area.
“I need to blend for brighter prints at higher mesh.”
Blend Brite Discharge Base 50/50 with HM Discharge Base to get the brightness advantage of the Brite system through mesh up to 230/inch. The blend inherits brightness from Brite and high-mesh flow from HM.
“My discharge ink keeps drying in the screen.”
Add Retarder MG (1-5%) or Quick Additive (6-9%). Use the mesh lubricant technique (30% Softener MG + 70% water). Keep fresh ink in the screen. Use thin-thread mesh like Saati Hydro mesh for larger open area that resists clogging.

Recommended Additives for Brite Discharge Base Production
| Additive | Dosage | Production Problem It Solves |
|---|---|---|
| Discharge Activator (Matsui or Printers Choice) | 3-8% | ⚠️ REQUIRED — enables discharge chemistry that removes garment dye. Without activator, no discharge occurs. 12-hour pot life once added. Mix only what you need for the day. |
| Retarder MG | 1-5% | Discharge ink drying in the screen — the #1 production killer with discharge inks. Extends wet ink open time. Essential for all discharge work. |
| Fixer WF-N | 1-5% | Discharged print fading or losing vibrancy after washing — crosslinks binder for improved wash fastness and color durability. |
| Softener MG | 1-4% | Ink needs better fabric penetration for complete dye removal — helps activated ink reach garment dye deep in the cotton fibers. Also enhances hand feel. |
| Thickener B | 0.25-1% | Ink too thin for consistent deposit — increases viscosity for better coverage and halftone dot control. |
| RV Additive | 1-3% | Ink too thick for smooth printing — reduces viscosity for better flow through high mesh. |
| Quick Additive | 6-9% | All-in-one solution — pre-balanced blend of Retarder MG + Fixer WF-N + Softener MG. One additive, one measurement, three production benefits. Recommended for most discharge jobs. |
Pro tip — mesh lubricant: Mix 30% Softener MG + 70% water in a spray bottle. Wipe on the ink side of the mesh before printing. Lubricates the mesh threads and prevents ink from sticking in the open areas — keeps your image crisp and prevents the design from closing in during the run.
Production best practices: Less ink is better on the screen. Add a small amount and continuously add fresh, hydrated ink during the run. Do not let discharge ink sit unused in the screen — it dries faster than standard water-based inks.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is Matsui Brite Discharge Base?
It is a neutral, clear water-based discharge mixing base. It contains no color or pigment. Add Neo Pigments at up to 15% for custom Pantone-matched colors, then add discharge activator at 3–8% to enable the discharge chemistry. The garment dye is chemically removed and your custom color replaces it, embedding directly into the cotton fibers.
Do I need discharge activator?
Yes. Brite Discharge Base does not discharge on its own. You must add 3–8% Matsui or Printers Choice Discharge Activator. Without activator, the base behaves like a standard water-based binder and will not remove garment dye.
What is the pot life after adding activator?
Approximately 12 hours. Mix only what you need for the day’s production. Do not store activated ink overnight, because the discharge chemistry continues working and the ink loses effectiveness.
What fabrics work with discharge printing?
Use 100% cotton with reactive, dischargeable dyes only. Discharge chemistry does not work on polyester, nylon, or other synthetic fibers. On 50/50 blends, only the cotton threads discharge, while the polyester threads keep their original color and create a heathered look. Always test the exact garment brand and batch before production.
What is the difference between Brite Discharge Base and HM Discharge Base?
Both are discharge mixing bases that take Neo Pigments. Brite Discharge Base delivers the brightest color results and is optimized for vivid spot color discharge. HM Discharge Base is optimized for halftone and simulated process discharge at high mesh. Blend them 50/50 when you want brighter prints at up to 230 mesh.
What is the difference between Brite Discharge Base and 301DM?
301DM is a dual-purpose base. It works as a standard water-based ink on light garments without activator, or as a discharge base on dark cotton with activator. Brite Discharge Base is a dedicated discharge base only. It requires activator and is designed to produce brighter discharge colors on dark garments than 301DM.
How long do I cure discharge prints?
Cure at 320°F (160°C) for 2–3 minutes. Discharge printing requires longer cure times than standard water-based printing. If the print appears darker in some areas, the garment needs more time in the dryer. The discharge chemistry needs full dwell time to completely break down the garment dye.
Why do discharge prints smell during curing?
The discharge activator chemically breaks down the garment dye during curing, and that chemical reaction produces fumes. Make sure your dryer has proper ventilation. The odor fades after curing is complete.
Can I print Brite Discharge Base without Neo Pigments?
Yes. Printing with activator but without Neo Pigments creates a clear discharge effect. The garment dye is removed, revealing the natural cotton base color, usually off-white or cream. This can be used as a standalone effect or as a soft-hand underbase for overprinting.
What additives should I use?
For most jobs, use Quick Additive at 6–9%, since it combines Retarder MG, Fixer WF-N, and Softener MG. For more control, use Retarder MG at 1–5%, Fixer WF-N at 1–5%, and Softener MG at 1–4%. You can also try a mesh lubricant made from 30% Softener MG and 70% water, wiped on the ink side of the mesh.
What mesh count should I use?
Use up to 305/inch (120/cm) for fine spot detail. For brighter prints at higher mesh counts, blend 50/50 with HM Discharge Base for prints up to 230/inch.
Can I use Neo Pigments in discharge the same way I use them in standard water-based bases?
Yes. It is the same Neo Pigment system, the same mixing ratios up to 15%, and the same Matsui CMS Color Matching Software formulas. The only difference is that you are using a discharge base instead of a standard water-based base.
Is Brite Discharge Base safe?
It is PVC-free. During curing, discharge printing produces fumes, so proper ventilation is required. The ink itself is safe for normal handling and is compliant with industry standards.
