Matsui HM Discharge White | High Mesh Premixed Discharge White for Halftone & Fine Detail White Discharge Art on Dark Cotton — The Softest White at 305 Mesh
Matsui
Matsui HM Discharge White is a premixed high mesh discharge white optimized for creating high-end halftone white opaque art on dark 100% cotton garments. Prints through mesh up to 305/inch (120/cm) for the finest white detail and softest hand achievable in discharge printing. Unlike the bases (Brite Discharge Base, HM Discharge Base) which are clear and require Neo Pigment additions for color, HM Discharge White comes premixed with white pigment — ready to activate and print white immediately. Ideal for photorealistic white halftone art, fine-line white detail, simulated process white separations, and any discharge job where the white must be soft, detailed, and printed at the highest mesh. Mix with Neo Pigments (up to 15%) for pastel discharge shades. Blend 50/50 with Brite Discharge White for brighter white through mesh up to 230/inch. Requires discharge activator (3-8%). Cures at 320°F (160°C) for 2-3 minutes. PVC-free. ⚠️ 100% cotton with reactive dyes only.
Price range: $29.99 through $259.99
Description
Matsui HM Discharge White — The White That Whispers Detail
When the design calls for photorealistic white halftone art on a black tee — smooth tonal gradients, whisper-thin highlights, detailed faces and photographic imagery — HM Discharge White is the tool.
It prints through mesh up to 305/inch. At that mesh count, the dots are microscopic. The tonal range is wide. The gradients are smooth. And the hand feel is virtually zero — the discharged white is so thin and so embedded in the fibers that it feels like the fabric itself.
This is not the white you choose for heavy opaque spot fills. That is what Brite Discharge White does at low mesh. HM Discharge White is the white you choose when detail and softness outrank opacity and brightness.
Premixed convenience: Unlike HM Discharge Base (which is clear and requires Neo Pigments for color), HM Discharge White comes ready-loaded with white pigment. Add activator and print. No pigment mixing required for white.
The White Discharge Hierarchy — Brightness vs. Detail
Matsui’s discharge whites form a spectrum from maximum brightness to maximum detail:
Brite Discharge White → BRIGHTEST white. Highest pigment load. Lower mesh (up to 160). The whitest white for spot printing.
Brite Discharge Super 75 → Pre-blended bright white (75% Brite White + 25% Brite Base). Economical. Lower mesh (up to 160).
HM Discharge White → FINEST detail. Softest hand. Highest mesh (up to 305). The halftone white.
Brite White + HM White blended 50/50 → Brighter than HM alone, finer than Brite alone. Prints up to 230 mesh.
Choose based on the job: spot white → Brite White. Halftone white → HM White. Both → blend.
⚠️ The Discharge Rules
- 100% cotton with reactive dyes ONLY. Does not discharge polyester.
- Discharge activator REQUIRED (3-8%). 12-hour pot life once activated.
- Cure 2-3 minutes at 320°F. Ventilation required.
- Test garment before production.

Recommended Additives for HM Discharge White Production
| Additive | Dosage | Production Problem It Solves |
|---|---|---|
| Discharge Activator (Matsui or Printers Choice) | 3-8% | ⚠️ REQUIRED — enables discharge chemistry that removes garment dye. Without activator, no discharge occurs. 12-hour pot life once added. Mix only what you need for the day. |
| Retarder MG | 1-5% | Discharge ink drying in the screen — the #1 production killer with discharge inks. Extends wet ink open time. Essential for all discharge work. |
| Fixer WF-N | 1-5% | Discharged white fading or losing brightness after washing — crosslinks binder for improved wash fastness. |
| Softener MG | 1-4% | Ink needs better fabric penetration for complete dye removal — helps activated ink reach garment dye deep in the cotton fibers. Also enhances hand feel. |
| Thickener B | 0.25-1% | Ink too thin for consistent deposit — increases viscosity for better halftone dot control at high mesh. |
| RV Additive | 1-3% | Ink too thick for smooth printing — reduces viscosity for better flow through high mesh. |
| Quick Additive | 6-9% | All-in-one solution — pre-balanced blend of Retarder MG + Fixer WF-N + Softener MG. One additive, one measurement, three production benefits. Recommended for most discharge jobs. |
Pro tip — mesh lubricant: Mix 30% Softener MG + 70% water in a spray bottle. Wipe on the ink side of the mesh before printing. Lubricates the mesh threads and prevents ink from sticking in the open areas.
Production best practices: Less ink is better on the screen. Add a small amount and continuously add fresh, hydrated ink during the run. Do not let discharge ink sit unused in the screen.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the difference between HM Discharge White and Brite Discharge White?
HM Discharge White prioritizes DETAIL and SOFTNESS — finest halftone white at 305 mesh. Brite Discharge White prioritizes BRIGHTNESS — highest pigment load for the whitest spot white at 160 mesh. Blend 50/50 for brighter white at 230 mesh.
Is HM Discharge White premixed?
Yes — white pigment is pre-loaded. Add activator (3-8%) and print. No Neo Pigment mixing needed for white.
Can I make pastels with HM Discharge White?
Yes — add Neo Pigments (up to 15%) for pastel discharge shades. The white base lightens the pigment to pastel tones.
What mesh should I use?
Up to 305/inch for finest detail. 230-260 for detailed halftones with moderate opacity. For heavier white, use Brite Discharge White at lower mesh or blend 50/50 at 230.
Do I need activator?
YES — 3-8%. 12-hour pot life. Does not discharge without activator.
What fabrics work?
⚠️ 100% cotton with reactive dyes only.
