Description

Nortech Wood Handle Squeegee — The Classic American-Made Screen Printing Squeegee

The Nortech Wood Handle Squeegee is the standard manual screen printing squeegee — the one that tens of thousands of American shops have used for decades. Hardwood handle, properly fitted 70 durometer blade, made in the USA, available in the widths that match production screens. There is nothing complicated about it. It is a reliable, properly balanced tool that does exactly what a squeegee is supposed to do: consistently push ink through the mesh under controlled, repeatable pressure.

Key Features

🇺🇸
Made in the USA
Nortech squeegees are manufactured in the United States — supporting domestic production and ensuring consistent quality control in materials and construction.
🪵
Hardwood Handle
Classic hardwood construction provides the weight, balance, and grip that screen printers prefer for manual printing. Hardwood is durable, easy to clean, and comfortable for long print runs.
📏
70 Durometer Blade
The most versatile standard durometer — works across plastisol, water-based, and discharge inks at standard mesh counts (110–200). The correct starting blade for general garment printing.
📐
Multiple Widths
Available in a range of widths to match your screen dimensions. Choose a squeegee width 1–2 inches narrower than your screen’s inside dimension for proper ink containment during the print stroke.
🔄
Replacement Blades Available
When the blade edge wears, replace the blade stock rather than the entire squeegee. Saati Duralife 70 durometer blade material is available per foot for blade replacement.
🤲
Proper Weight & Balance
The classic hardwood handle provides the weight that experienced manual printers prefer — enough mass to maintain consistent downward pressure throughout the stroke without gripping too hard.

Choosing the Right Squeegee Width

Squeegee width should match your screen’s usable printing area:

  • Choose a squeegee 1–2 inches narrower than the inside frame dimension of your screen
  • The squeegee should cover the full width of your artwork with a small overlap on each side
  • If the squeegee is too wide, it drags on the frame and doesn’t complete the stroke cleanly
  • If the squeegee is too narrow, it leaves un-printed areas at the edges of wide designs
  • Most shops stock 2–3 different widths to match their most common screen sizes

Wood Handle vs. Ergo-Force Handle — Choosing Your Setup

Wood Handle (This Product)
  • ✅ Classic balance and weight
  • ✅ Most economical complete squeegee
  • ✅ Made in USA
  • ✅ Familiar to most screen printers
  • ⚠️ Standard grip — no ergonomic contouring
  • ✅ Ergonomic grip — reduces hand fatigue
  • ✅ Better control on long runs
  • ✅ Aluminum construction
  • ⚠️ Higher cost — blade sold separately

📐 Understanding Squeegee Durometer

Durometer is the Shore A hardness rating of the squeegee blade — a standardized measurement of how stiff or flexible the blade material is. It directly determines how much ink passes through the mesh and the sharpness of the printed edge.

↑ Softer (60)
More flexible → more pressure on mesh → more ink deposit → heavier prints
⚖️ Medium (70)
Balanced → versatile across inks, mesh counts, and substrates → the shop standard
↓ Harder (80)
More rigid → less flex → less ink deposit → sharper edges → fine detail

🔧 Squeegee Blade Care & Sharpening

  • Clean blades immediately after printing — dried ink hardens on urethane and requires more aggressive cleaning, which accelerates edge wear.
  • Store blades edge-up or hanging — never lay a squeegee flat with blade down. The edge deforms under the handle weight over time.
  • Sharpen regularly — a dull blade requires more pressure to shear ink through the mesh, which increases mesh wear, stencil wear, and wrist fatigue. Sharpen when you notice ink deposit becoming uneven or edges ragged.
  • Inspect for nicks and flat spots — a nicked blade leaves streaks and uneven ink deposit. Sharpen past the nick or replace the blade section.
  • Use a squeegee sharpener or lap grinder — hand sharpening on sandpaper creates uneven bevels. A dedicated sharpener produces a consistent edge across the full blade length.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What width squeegee should I order?
Choose a squeegee 1–2 inches narrower than the inside frame dimension of your screen. The squeegee needs to clear the frame rails and cover the full width of your artwork. Most shops that run standard men’s t-shirt sizes stock 12″, 14″, and 18″ squeegees for different design widths.
Do I need to buy a different squeegee for water-based vs. plastisol?
No — 70 durometer is appropriate for both plastisol and water-based inks. The blade material and durometer don’t change based on ink type for general printing. You may prefer a harder blade (75–80) for very thin water-based inks on fine mesh for halftone work, but for standard printing, one 70 duro squeegee works across both ink types.
When should I replace the blade?
Replace or sharpen the blade when you notice inconsistent ink deposit, streaking across the print, or ragged edges on the printed image. A properly sharpened blade restores print quality. If the blade is nicked, chipped, or worn below the handle’s blade slot, it’s time to replace the blade stock.
Can I replace just the blade and keep the handle?
Yes — order Saati Duralife 70 durometer blade stock per foot, cut to your squeegee width, and replace the blade in your existing handle. The handle is designed to be reused — blade replacement is the economical way to maintain your squeegees.
