Technical Specifications

Directions Printing with TW 5500 Series:

Printing with TW 5500 Series Inks for Flat Stock Posters:

Materials You’ll Need:

  • TW 5500 Series Ink (Flat Green Shade Yellow or your desired color)
  • Screen Printing Frame with Proper Mesh (200 to 380 monofilament polyester)
  • Water-Proof Emulsion Stencil
  • Sharp 70 to 85 Single or Multi-Durometer Polyurethane Blade Squeegee
  • Screen Printing Press
  • Flat Stock Posters
  • Press Wash
  • Degradents for Ink Reclamation

Step-by-Step Printing Process:

  1. Prepare Your Screen:
    • Ensure your screen printing frame has the appropriate mesh (200 to 380 monofilament polyester) for flat stock printing.
    • Coat the screen with a water-proof emulsion stencil and allow it to thoroughly dry before image exposure.
  2. Ink Preparation: Stir the TW 5500 Series Ink well before every use to ensure a consistent ink consistency.
  3. Adjust Viscosity (if needed): The ink is typically press-ready for most applications and printing equipment. However, if necessary, adjust the ink’s viscosity by adding water, but do not exceed 5 to 10% by weight.
  4. Printing Setup: Set up your screen printing press with the prepared screen, ensuring it is aligned properly for accurate printing on your flat stock posters.
  5. Ink Application: Apply a generous amount of TW 5500 Series Ink onto the screen in the desired printing area.
  6. Squeegee Pass: Using a sharp 70 to 85 single or multi-durometer polyurethane blade squeegee, make a pass over the ink-covered screen. Apply even pressure to transfer the ink onto the flat stock posters.
  7. Printing Process: Run the screen through the press, making sure the squeegee evenly distributes the ink onto the flat stock posters. Repeat this step for each poster.
  8. Drying: The TW 5500 Series Ink will air dry in approximately 20 to 30 minutes at normal room temperature. For faster drying, you can use force drying at 90° to 150°F (32° to 66°C). Ensure that the drying temperature is not excessive to prevent material blocking.
  9. Quality Check: Inspect the printed posters for quality and ensure that the ink has dried and adhered properly.
  10. Clean-Up: After printing, wash up the equipment with a press wash and use degradents specifically designed for water-based inks during reclamation to clean the screen and tools.
  11. Storage: Store any unused TW 5500 Series Ink at room temperature, below 100°F (38°C), and away from open flames and excessive heat exposure. Protect the ink from freezing.
  12. Safety and Handling: Prior to use, refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for this product for safety and handling instructions.

Remember to always test the ink on a sample flat stock poster before starting production to ensure compatibility and desired results. Enjoy the vibrant and durable prints achieved with TW 5500 Series Inks on your flat stock posters!

TW 5500 Series Water-Based Poster Ink – Technical Specification:

  • TW Graphics® 5500 Ink Series – Overview: The 5500 Ink Series is a versatile, one-component, flat, water-based ink system designed to adhere to a wide variety of substrates. It’s suitable for various applications, including fine art serigraphs, polystyrene, Tyvek®, Tedlar®, polycarbonate, treated polyesters, pressure-sensitive vinyl, and aircraft interiors.
  • Recommended Screen Mesh: Use a monofilament polyester screen mesh with a range of 200 to 380 (80 to 150 cm) for optimal results.
  • Stencils: For stencils, use solvent and water-proof emulsion only. Dual-cure emulsions are recommended for added durability. Ensure the emulsion stencil is completely dried before image exposure. Small touch-up areas can be addressed with a water-proof block-out or emulsion.
  • Squeegee Type: Opt for a sharp 70 to 85 single or multi-durometer polyurethane blade for effective ink application.
  • Ink Additives and Thinning:
    • Stir the ink well before use.
    • The ink is typically press-ready for most applications and printing equipment.
    • Adjust viscosity with water, not exceeding 5 to 10% by weight.
    • Two thinners, TW-1820 for normal viscosity and TW-1821 for slower print cycles, are available.
    • Use retarders sparingly to reduce ink drying time within the screen.
    • TW-1822 for normal reduction, and TW-1823 slow retarder for fine detail or slow print cycles.
    • Do not exceed 5 to 10% of thinner or retarder by weight.
    • Use 1 to 2% by weight of 5100 Defoamer to eliminate bubbling during high-speed printing.
    • Use 5 to 10% of WB-1824 Activator by weight to improve chemical resistance, with a 24-hour activation period.
    • TW 4108 Flattening Powder can alter gloss levels, with 1 to 8% addition by weight.
    • Note that the addition of Flattening Powder increases viscosity, requiring adjustment with water or thinner.
    • TW 5008 Liquid Thickener increases viscosity, useful for fine detail or halftone areas, with 1/2 to 1% addition by weight.
    • Mix well and allow viscosity to develop for 10 minutes before use.
  • Adhesion Testing: Test all substrates before production. Conduct a Cross Hatch Test using 3M #600 tape to ensure ink adhesion.
  • Ink Wash Up: Wash up on the press with a press wash and use degradents specifically designed for water-based inks during reclamation.
  • Storage: Store at room temperature below 100°F (38°C). Avoid open flames and excessive heat exposure. Protect from freezing.
  • Packaging: Available in quarts, gallons, and five-gallon pails. 30 and 50-gallon drums are available upon order.
  • Safety and Handling: Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet for this product before use.
  • Estimated Durability and Light-fastness: Outdoor durability varies but typically lasts up to three years on most substrates, with exceptions for Reflex and Ultra Blue (up to two years). Color and gloss level changes may occur over time due to production variables and field use.
