Using Black

Black is the go-to color for light garments and for outlines and shadow layers in multi-color designs. It gives clean, high-contrast lettering on white, gray, heather and pastel shirts.

✓Black gives the most contrast on white, ash, heather gray and light-colored garments.
✓Dye migration is almost impossible to see on black vinyl, so black is a safe choice on dark or sublimated polyester where light colors could tint.
✓In layered designs, black works well as an outline or shadow under a brighter top color.
✓Lint and dust show on black. Lint-roll the garment before pressing.

How to apply it

  1. 1Mirror the design and cut carrier side down using a 60° blade; run a test cut first.
  2. 2Weed the excess; the static carrier is not sticky, so handle small pieces carefully.
  3. 3Cover with a cover sheet or multipurpose paper and pre-press the garment 2-3 seconds.
  4. 4Press at 310°F / 155°C with medium pressure for 15-20 seconds.
  5. 5Peel the carrier cold.
  6. 6Wait 24 hours before the first wash.

Before you buy

Best for smaller logos and designs; very thick material.
A 45° blade is not recommended on some cutters; use a 60° blade with plenty exposed.

Is black HTV safe on polyester jerseys?

Black hides dye migration better than any other color, so it is a safe pick on dark or sublimated polyester. Any lighter color layered on top can still show migration over time.

Can I use black as a base layer?

In lines that layer, yes. A black base under a brighter color makes a clean outline or drop shadow.

What temperature do I press Brick 600 at?

310°F / 155°C with medium pressure for 15-20 seconds, after a 2-3 second pre-press. Peel cold.

How thick is Brick 600?

600 microns (23.6 mils). Limited-edition Pearl colors are 500 microns.

What blade do I need?

A 60° blade is recommended. Brick 600 needs much more force than standard HTV, so test cut first.

What Cricut setting should I use?

Cricut Maker: standard blade, Cardstock. Cricut Explore: Light Cardstock+.

What Silhouette setting should I use?

Silhouette 4 and 5: Blade 7, Heat Transfer Smooth, force 20, speed 8.

Can I layer on Brick 600?

Yes, use it as the base layer. Covering it with EasyWeed EcoStretch gives an embossed look.

Can I use a home iron?

Yes. Set the iron between Cotton and Linen and press with firm pressure for 20 seconds; peel cold.

How do I wash it?

Wait 24 hours, machine wash cold with mild detergent and tumble dry low. No dry cleaning or liquid fabric softener.
